Climate Change Science for Southwestern Broadcast Meteorologists and Weathercasters

Weather extremes and climate extremes across America’s Southwest. Prospects ahead for the region’s forests…and for forest fires. The outlook for the North American Monsoon in a warmer environment. The role – and the similarities and differences, strengths and limitations – of weather models compared with climate models.

These issues and more will be the focus of a one-day weather and climate science workshop targeted specifically to the interests of broadcast meteorologists across Arizona, New Mexico, and nearby areas and scheduled for Saturday, September 28, at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  With an expert regional and national faculty, the workshop will earn attending TV meteorologists continuing education credits from the American Meteorological Society and from the National Weather Association.

The workshop is one of a string of broadcast meteorologist weather/climate science workshops held across the U.S. over the past several years. Limited to 15 participating meteorologists from across the Southwest, the workshops are conducted in a highly interactive format designed to address questions currently on the minds of the broadcast meteorology community. Conducted in concert with the University of Arizona’s prestigious Climate Assessment for the Southwest Program, CLIMAS, the workshop is managed by The Yale Forum on Climate Change & The Media (http://climatemediaforum.yale.edu) with financial support provided through grants to Yale University’s Center for Climate Change Communication and from Climate Central of Princeton, N.J. (http://climatecentral.org). There is no workshop fee for participating broadcast meteorologists, whose travel, lodging, and other approved out-of-pocket expenses are covered by the program sponsors.

There will be a reception for the workshop participants on Friday, September 27th at the Cushing Street Bar & Grill.

The workshop itself will take place on Saturday, September 28th in the Kiva Room (First Level) of the Student Union Memorial Center on the University of Arizona campus.
