SWES Colloquium Series - Socially-engaged climate research to support decision making: why it’s important, how it can be done, and how we can teach it
| Abstract: Research about climate variability and climate change (including societal impacts and social drivers) is inherently relevant. However, conducting climate research that is useful for informing decisions but remains scientifically robust presents a whole range of issues and challenges. Over the last three decades a lot of work has been done to improve the connections between climate research and the wide range of decisions that can be informed by that research. In this talk I will briefly explore three questions related to the challenges of carrying out use-inspired climate research: 1) why is socially-engaged climate research important? 2) How can it be done in such a way that the work remains salient, credible, and legitimate? 3) How can we train succeeding generations of scientists to carry out this kind of work? |
