Nupur Joshi is a 2019 recipient of the Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) Environment & Society Graduate Fellows Program.

Nupur is an urban geographer interested in studying urbanization and development in African and Indian cities. Her doctoral dissertation is based in low-income settlements of Nairobi, Kenya. Through a mixed-methods approach, she is conducting a spatial analysis of informal water infrastructures (locally called 'water cartels') and their health implications on women. She conducts research with women community members, Nairobi County government officials, non-profit groups and cartels themselves, to understand water quality, affordability and accessibility issues.

The US Southwest is highly vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change.

Linkages between climate change and poverty are well documented in other regions. However little is known about how the poor experience climate change in the Southwest U.S. and even less about how the projected impacts of climate change will adversely impact this already vulnerable population.

The research will highlight issues at several scales, include engagement with stakeholders and communities to identify appropriate next steps, and potential strategies for reducing climate change impacts in communities
